This morning we’ve talked to the Climate Change Minister David Parker who admits that Marsden B is unlikely to go ahead, as well as Nick Smith from the National party, Jeanette Fitzsimmons from the Greens and several radio studios.
Not sure if I’ve ever heard ’studio to studio’ radio interviews before but it’s a beautiful thing - one interview - two audiences - we have become the media.
We’re recording as much as possible and putting it up on the podcast page - Listen to them there or download them for your ipod - but don’t miss out!
We’ve been broadcasting Climate Rescue Pirate Radio 24/7 on 88.2 FM in Whangarei, 88.3 FM in Ruakaka and to the world on the internet for two days now from our secret Ruakaka studio. our two DJ’s Steve and Bomber have been awake for most of that time. They’ve done a alot of coffee, some great interviews from all over the world and today, on the last day, they’ve got lots more exciting stuff planned. There’s a few puffy eyes and stiff knecks here but we’re ready for another big day on the airwaves ….. use the comment form below to send a message in here to the studio - we want to hear from you!
Whangarei, Pirate’Climate Rescue’ Radio station, Heatwave FM, today issued a challenge to Prime Minister Helen Clark to explain how she intends to lead New Zealand into a carbon-neutral future without first halting the development of proposed coal-fire power station, Marsden B.
Broadcasting from a secret location and streaming live on www.heatwavefm.net until 6pm Monday night, Heatwave FM co-host, Martyn ‘Bomber’ Bradbury, believes Helen Clark is misleading New Zealanders with her recent comments on New Zealand’s climate sustainability, and that she also underestimates the strength of feeling from the public.

We’ve just had the three climbers in the studio for a chat. They’re bruised, tired and a little dissapointed but were welcomed into the studio like the heroes they are. An eight hour climb up the side of the rotting hulk that is Marsden B - they put thier bodies on the line for the cause.
Here’s a couple of pics from Michael’s mobile phone camera and you can skip over to the podcast to hear`the three of them talking to Steve on Heatwave FM.
Just heard that Radio Chomsky have picked up our stream as well. they’re broadcastig to Grey Lynn and Ponsonby in Auckland on 107.1 FM

Someone just emailed this pic in to us here at the station. Is that a local Whangarei sign ? Looks strangely North American to me … I don’t know but we’ll take all the help we can get.
We’ve just heard that Magic Fm in the Hawkes Bay is broadcasting our stream to their listeners! That’s just magic.
Any other takers? If you’ve got your hands on a radio station - get into it! Here’s the stream - let’s get it out there!
We’ve put together a video clip of the activities at marsden B yesterday.
Check it out here on youTube
Well we’re nearly at the end of a pretty remarkable day – after hearing about the police making it onto on the roof of Marsden B, the crew on the ground here whipped out a pretty impressive plan B. Since heatwave fm went live in Whangarei, we’ve received hundreds of texts and emails from the legendary locals. It’s been a relief to feel the same level of local support as was felt during last year’s campaign and we’re hoping for a great turnout at tomorrow’s Climate Change picnic. The banners destined for the side of the monstrosity (it really does look like a haunted prison from the outside) will now be strewn on the fences surrounding the complex and picnicees will be invited to add their names to the letter being sent to Nairobi. The activists have been going hard spreading the word around Whangarei – we have a feeling things will really start to pick up tomorrow - and Monday will no doubt be our biggest day on air.
Well it’s been a BIG day. Our activists, Michael, Emma and Kat scaled the giddy heights of the dirty old Marsden B powerstation to set up a heatwave FM radio transmitter on the roof. They didn’t get to stay up there as long as we would have liked but nevertheless we’re still broadcasting to Whangarei and Kamo as well as streaming to the world on the internet. The show must go on.
There’s been some great interviews with people all over the world on the Global Day of action and we’ll continue across the timezones tonight so stay tuned!
We went live to the internet this morning at the same time as Greenpeace activists climbed on to the roof of Marsden B power station in Ruakaka. And they’ve got an FM transmitter so we’ll soon be broadcasting our show over the airwaves!
As soon as they get themselves set up they’ll be beaming climate rescue radio on 88.3FM to the Whangarei area directly from the proposed power station’s roof. For now you can listen online.
Stay tuned.
We have the inimitable ‘Bomber’ Bradbury along with local musician Steve Abel spinning the disks and getting first hand accounts of Global Day of Action activities - not only in New Zealand, but also across the globe from Bangladesh to Belgium and will cross live to the activists on the roof of Marsden B.
Of late there has been a renewed interest in climate change both in the media and in Government. Maybe it’s Al Gore’s movie or maybe we’re seeing a critical mass … either way it’s none too soon. Just today we’ve seen reporting on the Stern Report’s estimate that climate change could top NZ$10 trillion devastating the world economy and that news is taking the world by storm (pardon the pun).
Here in New Zealand we’re hearing a lot of talk from the Government … but let’s see if we see any action. Developing some good climate change policy would be a good start and ditching the ridiculous Marsden B idea would too. We’ll see. Perhaps at the upcoming United Nations Nairobi meeting we’ll see some real action!
